Avast 5 - Blocks Microsoft Outlook 2010 from Sending and Receiving emails

Problem: Avast mail scan module blocks Outlook 2010 Gmail accounts from sending and receiving mail.

Solution:  To solve the situation perform the following steps:

  1. In your mail client software open the account settings and search for every e-mail accounts which require some type of encrypted connection (SSL or TLS). Also check what kind of protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP...), host names and port numbers are used for encrypted access to these e-mail accounts.

  2. Open the avast! user interface, click 'REAL-TIME SHIELDS' tab, from unfolded menu select 'Mail Shield' and then click 'Expert Settings' button.

  3. On the left pane of MAIL SHIELD SETTINGS window click the 'SSL Accounts' option, and there in the MAIL ACCOUNTS list you have to specify host names, protocols, port numbers and of course encryption type for e-mail accounts requiring encrypted connection.

  4. In the account settings of your mail client software disable encryption and set port numbers into default values for all protocols using the encrypted connection to access the relevant e-mail accounts. Do not change the other email account settings and/or protocols which use unencrypted connections (i.e. do not change the settings required by your e-mail and Internet services providers).
